Rosberg on pole as Hamilton crashes out

Mercedes AMG Petronas Nico Rosberg claimed pole position for the German Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton suffered a brake failure during the first knockout session at a hot Hockenheim. Rosberg set a time of 1:16.540 during Q3 to eclipse the Williams pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa on a difficult day for Mercedes team-mate Hamilton. Hamilton had already set a time good enough to make it through to Q2 but he suffered a front right brake disc failure as he approached turn 13 and was pitched into the tyre barriers. He was able to walk away from the crash but was unable to take any further part in qualifying and as a result will start the race from 15th on the grid. That paved the way...
