Ricciardo wins Laureus breakthrough award

Daniel Ricciardo has become the first Australian in five years to win a prestigious Laureus award, taking out the breakthrough of the year title in Shanghai, China, on Wednesday evening. The 25-year-old was nominated for the award along with US Open winner Marin Cilic of Croatia, Germany's World Cup winner Mario Gotze, Colombian footballer James Rodriquez, American Alpine skiier Mikaela Shiffrin and the Switzerland Davis Cup winning team. Ricciardo was the only non-Mercedes driver to win a Formula One race in 2014, which helped him cement third place in the Driver’s Championship.
