Hamilton lays down the benchmark in Canada first practice

Lewis Hamilton started the Canadian Grand Prix with much aplomb after going fastest in the first practice session on Friday, leaving the fiasco from Monaco well behind him. The championship leader dominated the outing as he went four-tenths quicker than Mercedes teammate and closest title rival Nico Rosberg at the Circuit Gilles Villenueve. Hamilton and Mercedes' pace seemed ominous as their time was 1.5 seconds clear from the rest of the field. But the gaps may not be representative as teams held back performance on a largely green track.
