FIA warns teams against ‘dummy' pitstops

Formula One race director Charlie Whiting has warned teams they could face penalties in the future if they copy the ‘dummy' pit stop tactic used by Mercedes at last weekend's British Grand Prix. Felipe Massa lead the early stages of Sunday's Grand Prix and, in an attempt to fool the Williams team into bringing the Brazilian in early, Mercedes sent its pit crew out as if it was going to stop one of its cars – a direct violation of the sporting regulations. 'Going into the pit lane like this, i.e. for no valid reason, is not allowed but the difficulty would be proving it was a clear breach,' said Whiting.
