Perez thinks fifth was possible without lap one contact

United States Grand Prix – Sergio Perez believes he could have finished fifth in Austin were it not for contact on lap one. The Mexican was rear-ended by Daniil Kvyat on the way into Turn 11 on the first lap of the race, which dropped Perez down the field and left him with rear bodywork damage. He was able to haul his way back up the field with a two-stop strategy, running the mediums for the remainder of the race after his first pit stop, before crossing the line in eighth. “Eighth place was a good recovery after our race was compromised on Lap One,” Perez said. “I was hit hard from the rear under braking for Turn 11 by Kvyat, who made a mistake and came in with no control.
