Could Alonso replace Rosberg at Mercedes? Nico Rosberg's surprise retirement from Formula 1 just five days on from his first championship wins has left a space at the very top of the F1 sport unfilled. Rosberg retained a new two-year deal with Mercedes in July last week and it leaves the German manufacturer with a massive judgement over who to bring in to replace him. The most obvious candidate is double time world champion Fernando Alonso.
