Vettel quickest as rain holds off in first Japanese GP practice

Sebastian Vettel made a flying start to the Japanese Grand Prix race weekend by leading first practice at Suzuka on Friday morning, finishing ahead of Formula 1 championship rival Lewis Hamilton. Concerns about rain prompted most drivers to get out on-track early to ensure they did not get caught out by the weather and could complete some dry running, only for wet weather to only hit in the closing stages. Vettel was able to send out an early warning shot to Hamilton by putting in a fastest lap time of 1:29.166 for Ferrari, finishing two-tenths of a second clear of the Mercedes driver at the head of the field.
