Several drivers start the coming season with penalty points
In case of a serious offence or causing an accident, the stewards can decide to hand out a penalty point. This will be added to the driver's licence and when the total of 12 is reached, a suspension will follow. This has never happened in the history of Formula 1 since the system was introduced in 2014, although Lewis Hamilton came close in 2020. What is the state of play now? Reduction after one year The system works in such a way that the penalty points awarded remain in place for one year. The points awarded at any one time are deducted from the total after exactly one year and with quite a few being awarded in 2020, not everyone goes into the new season with a clean sheet.
